Rainbow crossing a Labor election promise for Brisbane

Brisbane may get its own permanent rainbow crossing in Fortitude Valley under a Labor council.

With the city’s local election coming up, Lord Mayoral candidate Pat Condren and Central Ward candidate Judi Jabour have pledged Labor would deliver a rainbow crossing to celebrate the LGBTIQ community, QNews has reported.

Condren said that a Labor council would prioritise championing the community.

“It’s time for Brisbane City Council to get with the times and become more diverse and inclusive,” he said.

“Judi and I are focussed on delivering for the suburbs, residents, and communities forgotten by this LNP council.”

Jabour said that a possible location for the crossing was at Alden Street, adjacent to LGBTIQ venue The Wickham Hotel.

“We will consult with the Central Ward community on the best location that provides both visibility and safety for all pedestrians,” she said.

She added that visibility was important all year, not just during LGBTIQ community celebrations.

“As a proud member of the LGBTIQ+ community, I know that we celebrate diversity every day, not only on occasions like Big Gay Day and Pride Day,” said Jabour.

“That’s why it’s important to have physical symbols in our community to show that our city is accepting and inclusive.

“A permanent rainbow crossing is a great start to celebrate our community and our contribution to society.”

Jabour said that the crossing would also be beneficial for local businesses.

“It can become a tourism destination for overseas travellers who attend Sydney Mardi Gras and then make their way to Brisbane for Big Gay Day and Pride events,” she said.

Unlike many other cities around the world, Brisbane currently has no rainbow crossing, but a rainbow footpath has been located outside Spring Hill’s iconic Sportsman Hotel since 2015.

Local government elections for Brisbane and all councils across Queensland will be held on Saturday 28 March.
