Rainbow River Festival to celebrate LGBTIQ community in Noosa

The annual Rainbow River Festival is returning to Noosa, with three huge days of festivities planned for the first weekend of March.

Coinciding once more with the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, the Sunshine Coast’s own celebration of the LGBTIQ community will begin on Friday 5 March.

The beloved Sunshine Coast festival is now in its sixth year.

Despite some necessary changes this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, partygoers will be able to enjoy a range of social events.

“The 2020 Rainbow River Festival was one of the last times Queenslanders were allowed to gather and dance in large groups,” organiser Kirsty Patten told Pink Advocate.

“We acknowledge the change in the way we do things, so this year we are changing it up a bit.”

Instead of the usual festival opening at the Rowing and Yacht Club, the weekend will kick off with drag queen bingo at Lazy River Bar and Bistro.

On Saturday evening, a Mardi Gras viewing party at the Villa Noosa Hotel, hosted by local drag favourite Melony Brests, will follow a family-friendly game of beach cricket at the Spit Cricket Ground.

Sunday will begin with a community barbecue breakfast, followed by the famous Catalina river cruise.

The two-hour scenic river cruise incudes a welcome drink and a meal, and tickets are set to sell out fast.

“Our weekend will wrap up at Whisky Boy for post cruise drinks from 2 pm to 6 pm,” said Patten.

“Come and join us for another fabulous Rainbow River Festival in Noosa.”

The Rainbow River Festival will run from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 March. Full details of the events are available online.
