Flood appeal and crisis support launched by ACON

Community health service ACON has launched a fundraising appeal to provide crisis support to Northern Rivers LGBTIQA+ communities impacted by floods.

“Unrelenting rainfall and intense storms have caused significant flooding and damage in the Northern Rivers region and affected ACON services,” said CEO Nicolas Parkhill.

Parkhill said that many LGBTIQA+ community members were affected and ACON’s Lismore office was flooded.

“Like others, we want to pitch in and help our communities in this time of devastation and need,” he said.

“In response, ACON has been working to support our clients in the Northern Rivers, many of whom are highly vulnerable.”

The organisation has launched a new Crisis Support Service to provide immediate mental health and counselling support and help people navigate other services, including financial assistance and accommodation.

“We know many will be worried about medication, food, clean water, and other immediate needs,” said Deputy CEO Karen Price.

“We are, and will remain, connected to the broader emergency service response to help our communities navigate and link in with these essential services.”

Parkhill said that ACON wanted to “do more, for more people”.

“This is why we need your help,” he said.

“We are now calling on our communities outside of the Northern Rivers area to help fund our crisis support efforts by making a contribution to the ACON NSW Flood Appeal.”

Donations will help ACON directly assist LGBTIQA+ people in Lismore and surrounding areas to recover and rebuild.

“This appeal provides another opportunity for people to make a direct difference in this incredibly difficult time,” Parkhill said.

“We urge those who are in the position to donate to make a contribution to assist [LGBTIQA+ communities in the Northern Rivers get back on their feet. Thank you for your support.”

People can also contribute to supporting the Northern Rivers LGBTIQA+ communities by donating to the Tropical Fruits Community Fundraiser and the Queers of Lismore Fundraiser.

Thousands of buildings in Lismore and the Northern Rivers have been declared unliveable following the floods.
